CUTHBERT\S CLASSY TON
Ian Cuthbert\s classy hundred failed to save Wooburn Narkovians from defeat against Barnes on Sunday. Opening the Wooburn innings, Cuthbert set about the Barnes attack in his own inimitable style, hitting a number of bondaries. He helped put on 61 for the first wicket until partner Alan Cuthbert (20) fell to a sharp catch by wicket-keeper Cooke.
Pidgeon came to the wicket and managed to overshadow his partner by dispatching the ball to all corners of the ground. But as three figures beckoned his patience wavered, causing him to hole ot at long off for 92. Chris Sullivan (10) added late runs before Ian Cuthbert (110 not out) completed an excellent century to take Wooburn to 241-3 at the closure.
Barnes started their reply sedately with John Hennessey finding the edge without any luck. But the bowler was soon rewarded for a good opening spell by dismissing Lomas (32) and when Turner had Seaton caught, Wooburn looked set for victory. Sullivan\s direct hit disposed of Shaw, and when Hennessey bagged two catches there seemed no way back for Barnes.
However, once Turner\s exocet-like throw had left Cooke stranded in mid-run, Dudley (32) and Fraser (63) joined forces to turn the game on its head. Fraser was especially brutal as the pair struck some lusty blows to take full advantage of the loose Wooburn bowling. Both finally fell to bring Graham to the wicket, and with only three required, the batsman lofted the ball to long on for six to take Barnes to victory by two wickets.
