Match Report

EXCELLENT bowling from the experienced Phil Day and Tim Waxman laid the foundations for Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI\s comfortable eight wicket win over Teddington Town in Thames Valley Division 3.

Wooburn won the toss and put Teddington in on a slow, low pitch and Day began menacingly, swinging the ball prodigiously in the overcast conditions. Day made the initial breakthrough with two wickets in successive balls, putting the home side in trouble at 8-2. Pickering survived the hat-trick but never looked comfortable. Waxman removed him and then Rodman first ball, Hodges surviving the second hat-trick ball. At 41-5 Wooburn were in control, and although Hodges and Henry staged a mini revival, when they both went the score read 64-7 and the end was in sight.

However, sensible batting from Boothman and Ellis then frustrated the bowlers. Eventually Day was replaced by spinner Rob Rogers and Waxman made way for left-arm seamer Qadeer. Ellis took a liking to Rogers, thumping him straight for six, but he then fell attempting to repeat the shot. Rogers then wrapped up the innings with Teddington all out for 107. Day finished with 4-31, Waxman and Rogers 3-20.

Teddington\s opening attack consisted of Edwards\ off-spin and Reuby\s medium pace, both bowling to defensive fields. Wooburn openers, Dave Rogers and Alan Cuthbert had to be patient, with runs hard to come by in the early overs. Although the batsmen struggled to score freely, they were never in trouble, adding 52 for the first wicket before Rogers sportingly walked after being caught behind down the legside. Rob Smith then spent some valuable time in the middle, while Cuthbert kept the score moving before going for 52, playing no shot to a ball that came back. Captain Barker then came in to hit the winning runs, completing a comprehensive win for Wooburn.
