WOOBURN COMEBACK IS JUST TOO LITTLE TOO LATE



CHALFONT St. Peter 2nds held their nerve after a middle order collapse to defeat Wooburn Narkovians in a tense finish to a very exciting league game on Saturday.



Wooburn, having been put into bat, were soon in trouble, Rob Smith and Phil Day quickly back in the pavilion. Tim Waxman took the attack to the bowlers including a fine six over mid-wicket, but with Dave Rogers\ dismissal Wooburn found themselves at 40-3.



Richard Barker came in and found his timing straight away, cutting and driving with aplomb. When Waxman fell, a mini-collapse ensued leaving the visitors in very deep trouble at 80-7. Brad Sutherland and Barker took the initiative and pushed the score up to 130 before Barker was caught, after compiling a solid 53. The tail managed a small wag, getting the final total up to a respectable 145.



The Chalfont openers, Gooch and Mander batted sensibly against some wayward bowling, hitting 82 in the first 20 overs before the game was halted by a thunderstorm. When play resumed, Wooburn brought on Barker and Rob Rogers who tied down the prevously free-scoring batsmen. Barker\s dismissal of Mander lbw lifted Wooburn\s spirits, and four more wickets fell in quick succession to give Wooburn a glimmer of hope. The recall of Waxman brought the downfall of Peters, but dogged resistance from White (26) and a few streaky edges saw Chalfont home to a four wicket win.
