Sav and Friend see off Farnham Common

A vintage 79 from Stuart Savage and a fine all-round display from debutant Rowan Friend saw the 2nd XI through to a memorable victory over Farnham Common in the Thames Valley League, moving them into 2nd place in the table.



The conditions were barely playable at the start, and a heavy shower immediately put the game in doubt. The captains decided to go ahead, and Common were put in to bat. The pitch played fairly well considering the conditions, and openers Uphill and Montgomery added 99 for the first wicket. At 99-0 in the 30th over, Common looked set for a good total, but after Friend broke the opening partnership the bowlers managed to keep the run-scoring under control. 



Friend bowled throughout the innings to finish with the excellent figures of 6-61. Rob Smith and Ben Sturgess also produced useful spells, and Common\s lower order only managed to push the score up to 177-8 at the end of their 52 overs. It could have been much worse for Wooburn after that good start.



In reply, Wooburn were soon in trouble and slumped to 47-4 in the 21st over. Consolidation was required and who better than Rob Smith to provide it. Rob dropped anchor, grafting his way to 37 in two hours. At 68-4 in the 32nd over, Wooburn required 110 from 16 overs, a rate of nearly seven runs per over.



Sav now joined the party, producing a vintage display of hitting. He made 79 in even time, with 9 fours and 2 sixes. When he eventually fell, only 18 runs were required from three overs. Rowan Friend now revealed the other side of his game. He smashed 21 from just 9 balls, with 2 fours and 2 sixes, to seal the win with four balls remaining.
