Match Report

The 2nd XI\s 36-run defeat at Chenies & Latimer extended their recent dismal run to six matches without a win, and left them down amongst the relegation places in TVL Division 5A. Once again, a lack of depth to the batting line up was the difference between the two sides, despite an entertaining cameo from Dave Small.

Chenies decided to bat first on a hard pitch that looked full of runs. They started well enough through Moffit and Darbyshire, until Moffit fell lbw to Ben Sturgess. Brocklehurst then joined Darbyshire, and looked comfortable until the introduction of spinners Phil Clarke and Rob Rogers brought the scoring rate under control. Both bowled economically, although wickets were harder to come by.

Brocklehurst (38) eventually fell to Clarke, before Rogers got into the act with the wickets of Darbyshire (47) and Larkin. Wenman and Edwards picked up the run rate towards then end, taking Chenies to a solid 180-7 after their 52 overs.

Wooburn\s reply started well with 11 coming from the first over, and after seven overs the total had reached 31 without loss. However, Chenies\ bowlers were slowly gaining control, and with the total on 36, Ellett bowled Alan Cuthbert off his pads. Soon after, Angus Porter was bowled by a high full toss which hit the top of his off stump, and much now depended on skipper Stuart Savage.

Savage and Rob Smith consolidated, but apart from the odd well struck Savage boundary, the runs had dried up. Scoring had virtually ground to a halt when Savage tried to put Edwards over the mid wicket boundary and was bowled. Victory now looked a forlorn hope, but Dave Small had other ideas. Confounding his teammates, he at last began to fulfil some of that undoubted batting potential, scoring a rapid 37, including one enormous blow onto the pavilion roof.

Sadly, with two overs remaining, and victory impossible, Small lost his composure. Two balls after the \suspect\ Ellett had been called for throwing, he went for another big hit against the volatile paceman, succeeding only in putting the ball into the hands of mid off. Chenies then sealed their win two balls later, leaving Wooburn facing an uphill battle for the rest of the season.
