2nd XI's fate all but sealed

A 123-run defeat at the hands of OMT 3rds all but sealed the 2nd XI\s fate this season. At 61-1, chasing an improbable 224, hopes were still high, but after the dismissal of stand-in skipper Alan Cuthbert for 35, the rest of the batting collapsed to be 100 all out.



OMT\s innings had started shakily, two early wickets for Ben Sturgess leaving them 32-2. A third wicket stand of 115 then put them in control, opener Grey riding his luck to somehow reach 78. Left-hander Smee batted well for 60, but after his departure, the rest of the OMT batting struggled against the guile of Rob Rogers (4-32) and the bustling George Taylor (2-19).



A target of 224 looked well beyond Wooburn\s weakened batting order, but a sound start from Rob Smith and Cuthbert had the visitors worried. OMT disappointingly resorted to a verbal attack, which continued throughout the innings, even against the younger members of the Wooburn line-up. It was all very unsavoury and left a sour taste in the mouth.



Smith\s departure to left-arm seamer McCabe at 47 was a crucial blow. This was compounded when Cuthbert hit a full toss to mid-off, and the remainder of the batting was unable to keep out the swing of Uttley and the slingy pace and suspect action of Gentleman.
