Match Report

2nd XI all but relegated

The 2nd XI\s Division 5A status was left hanging by a thread after the a draw at Maidenhead & Bray. It is still possible to overhaul Chenies and Hillingdon, but it would require a 25-point win for us and our rivals to only pick up one and two points respectively.

The match at Bray was another frustrating affair, with luck and the odd umpiring decision favouring the home side. The Wooburn bowlers were particularly unlucky, with the ball landing wide of fielders or beating the bat time and again. Tim Waxman suffered most, but Smally could have picked up more wickets in his spell.

For Bray, Butt rode his luck in making 65, but Oldham played really well for his 61. The Bray skipper declared after his own dismissal, setting an unlikely target of 248 in 56 overs. Ben Sturgess produced the best bowling figures (2-28) for Wooburn, with Waxman finishing with 1-81 from 18 overs.

The Wooburn reply started well, against testing bowling. After 20 overs, Angus Porter (26) and Alan Cuthbert (33) had taken the score to 71-0, and a platform had been set for an assualt on the Bray total. However, disaster then struck with both openers falling at the same score, quickly followed by Steve Sweet.

An extended period of consolidation followed, with just 28 runs being scored in 17 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. The arrival of a bristling Dave Small changed all that. He galvanised the innings with some frenetic strokeplay and occasionally suicidal running. He helped add 55 for the fifth wicket before falling to the left arm spin of Mason for 27.

Rob Smith then departed to the young paceman Hassan for a patient 34, but Dom O\Kane, in his first match for 3 years, resisted well making an unbeaten 23. His only blemish was the disasterous run out of Graham Dare. In a tense finish, Tim Waxman and Ben Sturgess failed to trouble the scorers, but Rob Rogers calmly played out the last over to earn a draw.
