TABASAM MARKS DEBUT

WOOBURN Narkovians 2nd XI completed a comfortable 6 wicket victory away to I.C.I. Paints on Saturday thanks to a highly responsible innings of 66 not out from new boy Tabasam.

I.C.I. decided to bat first after winning the toss. Tim Waxman made a crucial early breakthrough, removing the dangerous Ian Rance with one that came back through the gate. The I.C.I. batsmen struggled against some accurate seam bowling from Waxman, Tabasam and Phil Day. Tabasam removed Keith Rance and Azam to put I.C.I. in trouble at 24-3.

Mitchell and Adams decided to graft their way out of it, as the bowlers maintained their stranglehold. Mitchell progressed to show a more positive attitude, playing some nice shots square of the wicket. He survived two chances behind the wicket on his way to a polished 61. Day eventually squeezed one under his bat with just enough force to remove the bails. Rob Rogers bowled the virtually strokeless Adams, and it was only in the last few overs that Chamberlain and Simon Rance tried to take the attack to the bowlers. I.C.I. closed on 149-7, which represented an excellent effort from the Wooburn bowlers in extremely hot conditions.

Wooburn\s reply started well enough, until they lost Alan Cuthbert caught at slip with the score on 25. Rob Smith and Dave Rogers kept the momentum going, taking the score up to 66 before Smith holed out to mid off. Tabasam, carrying a thigh strain from his earlier bowling stint, now joined Rogers. He proceeded to play the innings of the day, tempering his natural aggression with responsible defence. He was particularly strong on the legside, but also cut well and hit one huge six over long off.

Rogers eventually departed for a solid 39 with the score on 107, and Adam Chivers followed soon after. Tabasam finished the job with skipper Richard Barker, taking Wooburn to victory with 8 overs to spare.
