BRILLIANT BATTING FROM DAVID SMITH

David Smith was in good form at the weekend, scoring 86 and 102, and helping Wooburn Narkovians maintain their challenge at the head of the Prudential Chiltern League.



The Narks, defending champions, beat ICI Paints, although the start of their innings was anything but comfortable. The pace of Paranathala put paid to both openers with the score just past double figures.



Smith and Angus Porter rescued the innings, starting slowly before putting the ICI attack to the sword in a stand of 114. Porter presihed one short of his fifty, quickly followed by Stuart Savage. Jeff Morris (38) took on the bowling and helped Smith see the Narks to 201-5.



ICI were always in trouble against the formidable opening attack of Paul Sullivan and Phil Day. Only Wroot (22) and Adams (44) of the recognised batsmen achieved useful scores. Day had his figures wrecked by a last ditch onslaught from number 11 Higgs, who scored 36, including four successive boundaries. It was too little too late for ICI, who were all out for 144. Sullivan was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5-30.
