LAST PAIR PUT ON 110 FOR VICTORY
An extraordinary last wicket partnership between Paul Sullivan and Phil Cuthbert blasted North Maidenhead\s hopes of winning the Chilterns League championship on Saturday.
It looked like the Maids were cruising to a vital win over local rivals Wooburn Narkovians as the visitors were reduced to 70-9, chasing Maids\ total of 177. However, pace bowler Sullivan was joined by Cuthbert, usually a front-line bat but dropped down to number 11 after falling ill, and the pair put on 110 in just 14 overs to win the match. To add to the Maids\ frustration, the pair were dropped several times, and a run out was also missed.
Earlier, the Maids had batted steadily through George Stewart (18), George Tuckfield (25) and Tim Merritt (29). Pace bowlers Sullivan and Phil Day bowled their ten overs straight through to good effect. After a middle order collapse, Jerry Kingston (31), Alan Carter (18) and Justin Wakefield (23 not out) batted well to set a reasonable target.
The Wooburn reply started disasterously, with Wakefield and Mark Leoni bowling excellent opening spells. Again both openers bowled straight through their allotted overs, and the Narks were reduced to 47-7. Wakefield took 3-18 and Leoni 4-35. Day hit some lusty blows but when spinner Jonathon Stewart took two wickets with consecutive balls, the visitors seemed finished at 70-9.
Sullivan and Cuthbert then came together and the pair batted superbly. Sullivan was in particularly good form. His 65 not out included eight fours and two sixes, as he struck the ball with power. Cuthbert (48 not out) supported him well, hitting seven boundaries, as the Narks chalked up a remarkable win.
The Maids\ 2nd XI also had a disaster, losing their first league match for two years, as they were shot out for 66 by Wooburn 2nds. The defeat cut a 30 point lead at the top of the table to 11 points, and the Maids still have a lot to do in their last match if they are to retain the league title.
