SMITH EXCELS FOR WOOBURN

An excellent bowling and fielding performance helped Wooburn Narkovians beat Maidenhead & Bray and move into the third round of the Julian Cup.

On a lovely summer evening, in front of a large crowd at Bray, the Narkovians batted first and were in trouble at 14-3, with John Kelly and Geoff Hann doing the damage. David Smith then turned the game around. He made a controlled 34 before he had to retired under Julian Cup rules. The knock followed Smith\s brilliant unbeaten century the week before.

Smith had gained good support from Stuart Savage (11), Peter Harper (14) and Jeff Morris (16). At 87-7 the Wooburn score never looked adequate, but Ball (14) took a shine to Robin Syrett\s bowling and carted him all round the ground. The visitors were helped by some poor fielding from the Bray side, but nothing could detract from the way the Wooburn batsmen recovered down the order to reach 126-9. Hann finished with the best figures of 3-15.

Facing a reasonable total, Maidenhead & Bray were soon in trouble as three wickets fell for only eight runs. Paul Sullivan dismissed both openers, while Phil Day also took a couple of early wickets.

Kevin Murray scored 30 before having to retire, but he was also involved in a run out mix-up which left him at the same end as Tim Graveney, and saw his skipper out without scoring. Of the later batsmen, only Hann (14 not out) made double figures and Bray were finally out for 78 with five and a half overs still left.

The 48 run defeat was sweet revenge for Wooburn, who were knocked out of the competition last year by Bray, after failing to defend what was briefly a record score in the competition.
