Savage sets new record for Wooburn at Lord's

All rounder Stuart Savage became the first ever Wooburn player to score 1,000 runs and take 100 wickets in a season when they shared the spoils with Cross Arrows at Lords on Thursday.

The special fixture, played on the Nursery Ground at the home of cricket, was expected to be the highlight of Wooburn\s golden jubilee season and lived up to all expectations. Both Paul Cooper and Stuart Savage broke club records on a day when over 450 runs were scored in an honourable draw.

The home side, including several first class cricketers, had first use of a good batting track and openers Rudd (45) and Houston (15) put on 59 for the first wicket. Three wickets then fell at a cost of only four runs, and Cross Arrows looked in danger of losing their unbeaten record having scored only 140-6 at lunch. However, fine batting from Medlycott (41), Foyle (68) and Donelan (40 not) boosted the home side to 246-7 declared.

The visitors started their reply in impressive fashion as Ray Bing (59) and Cooper (41) carried their side to 83 without loss by the tea interval. In the process, Cooper passed the previous club record of 1,255 in a season scored by Mike Tuohy in 1967.

Wooburn became bogged down after tea thanks to the accurate bowling of Surrey\s Medlycott (4-79) and Derbyshire\s Rudd (3-45). Ian Cuthbert then hit a fine 52 in 35 minutes off 44 deliveries to put Wooburn back in the hunt.

Skipper Savage then broke the second record of the day, passing the 1,000 run mark by hitting Medlycott for a huge six. He had claimed his 100th wicket the week before and his 13 runs made him the first Wooburn player to complete the double. Two years before, Savage had fallen just two wickets short of achieving that record when the last game of the season was rained off.

Savage fell to Medlycott the very next delivery and Wooburn eventually settled for the draw on 210-8 at the close of play.
