Match Report

Lone Stand in Vain

Wooburn Narkovians opening batsman, Bob Smith, carried his bat through his side\s completed innings on Saturday, but could not stop them falling to six wicket defeat against Taplow. Smith smashed an unbeaten 89, but none of his teammates could stay with him and the side mustered only 139 all out.

Wooburn batted first on a wicket affected by heavy overnight rain, and were quickly reduced to 11-3 as Phil Surridge continued his recent good form by removing the first three batsmen cheaply. Opener Smith held firm and, aided by the fact that he was dropped three times, continued to hammer the bad ball as wickets fell regularly at the other end.

Dave Wigmore found the conditions to his liking and returned figures of 6-42 from 10 overs, backing up Surridge (3-16) as Wooburn were dismissed for 139 in the 43rd over. Smith (89 not) carried his bat, but only Morris (20) and Stuart Foster gave hime any support, with wicket-keeper Martin Carruthers taking four catches and Graham Kell three for Taplow.

Kell went early in the home side\s reply, but Dave Holland and Dave Greenaway (56) built a solid second wicket partnership of 63, with Greenaway hammering his fifty in quick time. Bob Salmon (31 not) then played an influential innings and, together with Chris Goodrham, steered Taplow to victory in the 36th over.
