Savage's efforts sees Wooburn Narks home

A fine all-round performance from Stuart Savage eased Wooburn Narkovians home against Maidenhead & Bray at Taplow, and earned them a place in the Julian Cup Final. His knock of 28 was followed up by a bowling display of 4-14 which mopped up the Bray tail-end quickly, to leave them still 16 runs short of the Wooburn total.

In a game of fluctuating fortunes, Wooburn were helped by several other good performances in fighting off the challenge from Bray. Batting first, the Narks were given a steady, but slow start from Ray Bing and Dick Keeble. Chris Wilson, Bray\s South African quick bowler, passed the bat on a number of occasions without luck.

After the two openers had been dismissed and Rod Ball had removed Geoff Anthony, Wooburn were struggling at 38-3. It was then that Savage came in and, after a tentative start, he hit out with three fours and a six in his innings. He was ably supported by David Smith (29 not), who hit 12 off one over, and they helped their side to 73 before the stand was broken. Jeff Morris (14 not) helped Smith carry things on and they took the total to 116-6 off 24 overs, leaving Bray a reasonable target.

Doug Nower sent back two Bray batsmen with only 7 runs on the board, but Charles Mullins and Wilson (32) weighed in to good effect. Wilson hit 20 off one over and put Maidenhead & Bray well on target and up with the run rate. But wickets continued to fall. Phil Day bowled extremely well to take 1-12 off eight overs, and Wooburn began to get on top again.

With the score on 90-5, and only four an over needed, the odds seemed stacked in Bray\s favour until Savage came on the scene.
