Match Report

Wooburn Narkovians 2nds slipped to a seven wicket defeat at the hands of Kew 2nds in their first game in Division 4A of the Thames Valley League. On a slow pitch, Wooburn failed to score enough runs to put Kew under pressure and despite a spirited effort in the field, were ultimately comfortably beaten.

With a number of regulars missing, the Wooburn side had a youthful appearance, with three colts playing. All of whom acquitted themselves well. It was important, however, that the senior batsmen made runs and, with the exception of Rob Smith (34) and Paul Cuthbert (29), this did not happen. One disappointing feature of the innings was having eight batsmen clean bowled, many by yorkers.

The Kew bowling was steady, if unspectacular, perfect for the slow conditions, and Wooburn found it difficult to get the ball away. A score of 150 might have made a game of it, but 106 was always going to be difficult to defend.

Wooburn opted to keep the old ball initially, in the hope of making use of the slowness of the pitch. The Kew openers started shakily and rode their luck. Tim Waxman and Qadeer bowled well early on, but it was not to be their day. Wooburn desperately needed early wickets, but a number of bowling changes failed to provide the breakthrough. The score had reached 53 by the time Richard Barker finally removed Ashton. Hickman and Cosstick then added another 40 for the second wicket to make the game safe.

Steve Butcher had Hickman caught behind in the middle of a good spell, and Waxman deservedly took the wicket of Williams, but the result was never really in doubt. Cosstick, who anchored the Kew innings, hit the winning runs, and finished unbeaten on 45.
