Match Report
After a difficult start to the season, Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI gained their first victory in an exciting match at local rivals Marlow 2nds. A fine team performance was capped by a thrilling display of hitting by Tab Nawaz as Wooburn reached their target with 2 overs and four wickets to spare.
Asked to bat first on a fast true pitch, Marlow were soon in trouble against Wooburn paceman Tim Waxman. Waxman troubled all the early batsmen, picking up two good early wickets thanks to fine catches in the gully. Richard Barker gave good support at the other end with the wickets of Keith Hillier and Stuart Peacock. Hayne then took control for the home side, batting superbly to score 81, an innings full of good strokes all around the wicket.
Wooburn chipped away at the other end, with Tab removing Trotter for 9, and Lowe, well caught by Barker, for 20. Hayne then found a solid partner on Nicky Saunders, who missed watchful defence with some solid blows in making an important 29. Waxman returned near the end of the innings to take two further wickets and Barker yorked Hayne with the last ball, Marlow finishing on 200-9 from the 52 overs. Waxman was the pick of the bowlers with 4-57, while Barker took 3-66 and Tab Nawaz 2-43.
In reply, Wooburn got off to their best start of the season, with Rob Smith and Alan Cuthbert putting on 48 for the first wicket before Cuthbert (23) played all round a half-volley. Paul Cuthbert continued the good work, and the total had reached 108-1 before disaster struck. Cuthbert (36) and Smith (40) fell in successive overs, leaving Wooburn requiring 92 from the last 14 overs.
Tabasam rose to the challenge. He started quietly, taking time to play himself in, but then unleashed a succession of powerful shots, including two huge sixes and six fours. He was supported well, initially by Ben Roberts, and then by Richie Barker. By the time he was bowled by Ian Twelftree for a magnificent 58, the equation had come down to 14 from 3 overs. Tim Waxman and Derek Milsom wasted no time in finishing the job.
This victory takes Wooburn off the bottom of Thames Valley Division 4A, and should give them great confidence for the rest of the season.
