Match Report

After spending the first half of the season making up the ground lost after their opening day defeat, the 2nd XI went back to square one after a second crushing defeat at the hands of Kew. A poor batting display saw the Narks bowled out for just 53, a massive 161 runs behind Kew\‘s 214-6.

Starting the game just ahead of Kew in the league table, Wooburn inserted the visitors in helpful bowling conditions. Batting was extremely difficult in the early stages, and Kew did well to keep their wickets intact. Tim Waxman and Richie Barker bowled well but without luck, while opener Cosstick grafted his way to a gritty half-century. A tiring Waxman was replaced by Pete Harper and, with the ball getting softer, batting became an easier proposition.

Rickman returned after retiring hurt to hit a rapid 36, and Sprattley made 47, as Kew accelerated the scoring rate. Barker bowled steadily to take 3-68 in 20 overs, but Kew still managed to reach a formidable 214-6 in their 52 overs. Harper also took three wickets but was a little expensive.

The Wooburn reply was instantly forgettable. In conditions that still favoured the bowlers, particularly with a new ball in their hands, the innings subsided to an embarrassing 53 all out. Without Waxman spirited 27, it would have been a lot worse. The top order was blown away, the low point being reached at 19-7, before Waxman demonstrated how it should be done. For Kew, Houlton took 6-27 in a fine spell of seam bowling. A day best forgotten by Wooburn.
