North Maidenhead enjoyed a rare break in their Sunday League programme, when the played and narrowly won a good-natured friendly with Wooburn Narkovians.



After losing the toss and being forced to field first, North Maids made the most of the new ball on a lively track to have the visitors 40-3 after 13 overs. Leigh Atkinson, bowling seam-up, grabbed three, later completing his five-wicket haul (5-15) with his more orthodox left-arm spinners.



Seven bowlers were used as North Maids tried to tease the remaining batsmen out. However, they were not easily lured and, based around Andy Tennant\s tidy knock of 56, the Wooburn middle and late order hit the ball well. Support came from all the batters, especially Morris (30), and young Ben Sturgess, who showed a maturity and technique beyond his years.



The final total of 173 from 42 overs, including 25 byes, was always going to be a useful challenge, and so it proved.



Only skipper Leigh Atkinson (54) could really put bat to ball, although the top three all reached double figures. Wooburn\s Eastaugh produced a fine spell of 3-28 from 11 overs to put the hosts on the back foot. In fact, with eight batsmen back in the pavilion, North Maids still needed 46 from the remaining seven overs.



They managed it with two balls to spare. Wicket-keeper Andy Ward (28) hoisted two big sixes and then Graeme Copas (22 not out) slapped 10 runs from the last three deliveries to see the home side to victory by one wicket.
