Pete Selleck smashes record 203 to setup victory

Pete Selleck smashed Wooburn Narkovians’ individual scoring record with an unbeaten double century at Wendover on Sunday, setting up a crushing 177 run victory for the visitors.

From the powerful square cut for four off his first ball to the towering straight six which brought up the milestone, Selleck totally dominated proceedings – so much so that in a stand of 209, opening partner Dave Rogers contributed just 48.

The feat was made more remarkable by the condition of the wicket, which was low and slow with plenty of grass, and by the fact that Selleck, playing his second game of the season, had never previously made a fifty in adult cricket.

He offered four or five chances of varying difficulty during the innings, but most of these were late on as he tried to beat the captain’s declaration, which came as soon as he reached his double century with the score on 290-2.

And Selleck was soon back in the action after tea, snapping up a sharp chance in the gully to give Ben Sturgess his second wicket of the afternoon, leaving Wendover 7-2.

A stand of 50 between the two Tomlinsons followed, before the partnership was broken in bizarre fashion. Phil Mellon, bowling the 16th and final ball of an over that contained eight no-balls and two wides, enticed one of the increasingly bewildered pair to pull a high full toss, which probably should have added to the no-balls, straight to Chris Hall at mid-wicket.

Wendover’s middle order then collapsed against the guile of Rob Rogers (3-16) and the pace of Dave Small (2-14). From 77-8, Adams and Ford managed to take the score past 100 before Dan Hawker returned to clean up the last two batsmen – Wendover finishing on 113.
