Match Report

Aldershot too strong

The 1st XI slumped to a disappointing defeat at the hands of a strong Aldershot 2nd XI, despite a superb opening spell by Gerry Tennant. Defending a respectable target of 190, the Narks looked the more likely of the two teams, but ultimately paid the price for failing to hold their catches. Hard hitting Gaskill led a well executed run chase, and the visitors eased home with 7 overs to spare.

Put in, Wooburn started cautiously on a slow pitch against some steady medium pace. A sold start from Angus and Dave Rogers was undermined by the loss of two quick wickets. Andy Tennant helped recover the position, before ‘nelson’ struck, Angus going just short of a well deserved fifty. Another flurry of wickets left the Narks in real trouble on 134-7, but some vintage Sav, ably supported by Gerald, took the final score up to a competitive 189.

It looked a potentially winning score when Gerry removed the Aldershot skipper. Dates grafted his way to double figure, before falling for the slower ball. At this point, Aldershot looked anything but winners. The imposing Gaskill looked uneasy in defence, but then proceeded to take it out on Smally, rather unfairly. At the other end, Morley, surviving a couple of difficult chances, provided the perfect foil, and the game was gradually taken from Wooburn’s grasp.

By the time Gerald’s DJ duties called, Aldershot had taken charge. Wooburn fought gamely, but were unable to break through. Gaskill eventually departed, miscuing to Smally at deep mid wicket, but Morley remained to see the job through.

After a tough start to the league campaign, the 1sts now desperately need some wins to put themselves back in contention, starting at Stoke Green.
