Wooburn 2nds played host to Barnes Wild Geese on Saturday in a rain interrupted match. The game was initially reduced to ninety overs since Barnes turned up late due to directional difficulties. Wooburn batted first and the in-form Derek Milsom was once again despatching the bowling attack to all parts of the ground. Richard Harman joined Derek when the score was on thirty three and in a typical Harman innings hit two enormous sixes and five fours before falling attempting another shot over extra cover.

Big Al Cuthbert then came to the crease, new bat in hand. Today was his day. An eloquent innings followed, pushing the ball all around and hitting the bad ball with fierce determination. Unfortunately he fell hitting a ‘Rocket’ directly at Stevenson. A perhaps suitable ending for the engine of the team ?

Wooburn were pushed on after the departures of Derek (54) and Al (60) by Sav (41) who fairly bludgeoned the ball to the boundary in ‘Sav’ style.

The start of Barnes innings was halted, after only 2 overs, by a torrential downpour which lasted some time. The wicket was soaked and ‘touch and go’ whether play would restart. Barnes wanted to play to gain points in their struggle to avoid relegation. Wooburn agreed to play on. Milsom came on to bowl some slow spinners due to the wet conditions. Barnes’ top order batsman capitulated in front of his ‘guile’.

What happened next was a mystery to all concerned. After losing their first 4 wickets with just 43 on the board, and after just maybe 13 or 14 overs, Barnes stonewalled the remaining 30 overs for a draw leaving more than one ‘Grumpy’ Wooburn player in the changing room. Only Bulzomi (53) tried to score any kind of runs, while Stevenson managed just 27 not out. Sometimes you wonder what the point is.

One consolation from the day was Tom Lees’ and James Briggs’ bowling. Both lads bowled really well in difficult conditions. The future looks rosy. The draw, however, still leaves the 2nds 25 points away from safety with just 5 games remaining……and it’s holiday season.
