A severely depleted 2nd XI achieved the main target of fulfilling the fixture, but then slipped to a predictable 8 wicket defeat at the hands of league leaders Maidenhead & Bray 2nd XI.

The match ended in farce with the Maidenhead batsmen refusing to run ones and twos, presumably because they wanted to hit boundaries. Such behaviour revealed a total lack of respect towards the Wooburn players and left a very sour taste, despite a later apology.

With a large number of regulars on holiday, Wooburn fielded a makeshift 10 and, in the circumstances, decided the best option was to bat first. A repeat of last week’s century opening stand was required, but it was not to be, and the batsmen struggled to get on top of some economical bowling.

Rob Smith defended stoutly for 30, Arran Shearer contributed 22 and stand-in skipper Graham Dare stroked 25, while attempting to protect the tail. For the home side, Armstrong bowled throughout to claim 4-50.

Wooburn’s threadbare attack picked up an early wicket, Cheema superbly caught one handed by Pete Harper at slip off Rob Smith. Rob then had Vaja dropped at cover next ball. The batsman went on to hammer 57.

Wooburn did not help their cause by dropping a whole host of catches, although some of them were very difficult. Rob did take a second wicket, bowling Parham for 19, but Vaja and Alam proceeded to slog their way to the target, before the embarrassing and rather undignified end.
