Match Report
Brave Wooburn fall short
Skipper Dave Small got off to a dreadful start when he lost the toss on a scorching day at Reading. With a great batting track, lightning outfield and Wooburn with a depleted side it was always crucial to bat first. Mark Tennant and Richie Barker bowled excellently early on with Barker picking up one wicket and very unlucky not to have an LBW decision go his way.
However, Cowan and Aziz soon took control despite the fine efforts of Sam Cuthbert, Ian Cuthbert and Andy Tentnant.
Both Aziz and Cowan fell just short of their centuries with Cowan brilliantly run out by Mark Tennant on 99.
Fine fielding from Robert Hall (jnr & snr) and Matt Paine in particular enabled Wooburn to take a couple of late wickets and after 4 long hours in the field Reading declared on 305-6 off 47 overs.
Dave Rogers and Sam Cuthbert got Wooburn\s innings off to a great start before Cuthbert was bowled by Wilkins. Mark Tennant hit a couple of glorious boundaries before edging one to gully. Richie Barker endured a torrid time against the short ball and was bowled by Wilkins cutting one back.
Chris Hall joined Dave Rogers and following his 119 not out last week picked up where he left off with sublime cover drives. He fell LBW and Dave Rogers was bowled soon after for a fantastic 69.
Andy Tennant and Ian Cuthbert came together with Wooburn teetering on 134-5 and batted beautifully to add 100 runs and give Wooburn a real chance of a highly unlikely victory. However, with the score on 237, Tennant was controversially given out LBW. Dave Small then joined Ian Cuthbert with 60 runs needed off the last 7 overs and 4 wickets remaining.
Dave Small got off to a flying start with 10 runs coming off his first 3 balls before Ian Cutbert was bowled for a superb 87 trying to force the pace.
With victory stil a possibility Dave Small continued to attack and was caught in the deep soon after.
By now, it was 9pm and light was fading but Matt Paine was holding strong before being bowled by a yorker. Rob Hall was bowled soon after to give Reading 25 points and Wooburn 8 points.
An all round superb effort from all the Wooburn players in trying circumstances.
