Match Report

Stroll in the Park

Wooburn Narkovians strolled to another victory over 3rd placed Aldershot on Saturday, but results elsewhere meant that their faint promotion hopes were over and 3rd place beckons for the fourth year in a row.

Skipper Dave Small lost yet another toss (he\s won once all season!) and Aldershot chose to bat.  With the wind behind him Mark Tennant bowled one of the quickest spells of bowling ever seen at Wooburn Park, also gaining some good bounce.  James White had the unenviable task of bowling into the wind but started excellently by removing the dangerous Grover, well caught by Mani Sharma at square leg.  Morley soon followed trapped in front by a swinging delivery before Tennant trapped capatin Dates wandering across his stumps.

Bazem and Anslow then consolidated but the introduction of Richie Barker and Phil Cuthbert proved crucial.  Barker bowled Anslow and Phil Cuthbert then took the gloves of Mountain and the edge of Bazems bat with some hostile bowling, Chris Hall taking two sublime catches behind the stumps.

With the aggresive Bailey run out and Barker bowling Coomber, the young Jennings twins found themselves together at the crease.  The young lads showed the rest of their team how to bat properly before Andy Tennant produced an excellent off cutter to break up the partnership.  Holloway and Jennings then frustrated Wooburn for a little longer before Mark Tennant was reintroduced and eventually removed Holloway, crashing the ball into his off stump.

Aldershot finishing on a well below par 107 all out.

Tom Lees found himself opening the batting for the first time and looked like a natural alongside his mentor Paul Cooper.  The pair added 22 before Cooper was bowled with an outswinger by the impressive Jennings.  Andy Tennant then joined Lees and both batted beautifully, keeping the score ticking over with regualr boundaries.  Lees then edged one to slip and this was the first of 3 wickets to fall in 4 balls as Rogers was bowled by an inswinger and Mani Sharma fell to an outstanding catch in the gully.

After crusing along, Wooburn were now at 57-4 and James White joined Tennant at the crease.  White found his touch almost instantly and with Tennant punishing anything loose the score slowly crept up.  White then produced some trademark drives and Tennant pulls and cuts as Wooburn raced to victory with 28 overs and 6 wickets to spare.

And so the promotion hopes are over for another season.  This was an all too familiar season for Wooburn with numerous very comfortable victories, but along with the weather intervening on 3 occasions, a couple of lack lustre performances mean we may well finish in 3rd place again.  It\s been said before, and it\ll be said again - next year we will go up!  In the meantime, we move on to top of the league Farnham Royal next week to try and ruin their championship winning party…..

The Tennants will be hosting an end of season BBQ at their house (45 Tilsworth Road, Beaconsfield) next Saturday after the cricket match.  All at the club are invited, details to follow by email and on this website.  It would be great to see as many of you and your families there as possible.
