Match Report

The 2nd XI began the league season with a solid 5 wicket victory over Boyne Hill at Wooburn Park.

Wooburn skipper, Stuart Savage, won a useful toss and, rejecting last season\s bat first policy, opted to put the visitors in on a damp early season pitch. Early concerns over the Wooburn bowling strength had been allayed by the inclusion of Rob Rogers and, along with seamer Graham Dare, he soon had Boyne Hill in trouble.

The openers struggled to make any headway against accurate bowling, but the Narks failed to take early chances when Burnett was dropped three times on 7. The misses did not prove costly, Burnett dragging the ball onto his stumps in the next over. Burnett\s dismissal started a steady procession of Boyne Hill wickets as they slumped to 49-6, Graham picking up five wickets in his first bowl since September.

Bradshaw and King now consolidated, defending stoutly against the accurate Robster. With overs running out, the batsmen tried to push on, and King hit three sixes before being stumped for 54. A final total of 151-9 represented a good recovery, but Wooburn would have settled for that at the start.

The Wooburn reply started badly when Derek Milsom was yorked by off-spinner Dozell. Dave Pidgeon looked in good form, but with the League Two play-off looming, a long innings looked improbable. And so it proved when he was caught in the gully for 22. Angus Porter and Alan Cuthbert now looked to graft Wooburn to victory, and they were looking comfortable when Cuthbert drove a full toss to short cover. Porter departed soon after for a gritty 39, to leave the Narks wobbling slightly at 88-4.

A captain\s innings was now required and Savage duly obliged. First in partnership with Graham Milsom and then with Rob Rogers, the Wooburn skipper led the team home with a watchful unbeaten 47.
