Match Report

Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI managed to hold out for an unlikely draw against a strong Beaconsfield 3rd XI after the visitors had dominated the match throughout. A Steve Lynch century, followed by a devastating spell by young seamer Rory Wilson, looked to have taken Beaconsfield to victory, but Wooburn’s Angus Porter (80) and last pair, Pete Harper and injured skipper Stuart Savage, salvaged a draw for the home team.

Beaconsfield opted to bat in the hot conditions at Wooburn Park, and the omens did not look good for Wooburn as Coles and … got the innings off to a flier against the all spin attack of Harper and Rob Rogers. However, Beaconsfield’s openers paid the price of over ambition, both falling to Harper, and at 37-2 Wooburn were back in the match.

The experienced pair of Suter and Lynch took time to play themselves in, but accelerated well in a century partnership. Wooburn hopes were hit when Stuart Savage had to leave the field with a muscle injury, but the 10 men worked hard in the field to restrict Beaconsfield. Suter fell just short of his fifty trying to force the pace, but Lynch, now striking the ball cleanly, reached his hundred just before the declaration came. For Wooburn, Harper bowled throughout to take 5-107, a great effort in the draining conditions, while Derek Milsom chipped in with two important wickets, as well as two fine catches. The closure came with Beaconsfield on 232-7.

With Savage unlikely to bat, much depended on Wooburn’s top three batsmen. Their reply started well, with Angus Porter and Milsom looking in little trouble in adding 49 for the first wicket. Disaster then struck when a terrible mix-up resulted in Milsom being run out. Alan Cuthbert then helped Porter take the score in to 69-1, but Cuthbert’s dismissal sparked a middle-order collapse that destroyed any hopes Wooburn had of victory.

The Narks slumped to 100-8, but with Porter still holding firm and Harper solid in defence, they still had hopes of a draw. Sagoo eventually dismissed Porter, caught at silly point for 80, but the injured Savage bravely came out to survive the last few overs.
