Harper Weaves His Magic Over The Hill
Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI continued their recent good league form with a comprehensive 9 wicket victory against Boyne Hill 2nd XI at Boyn Grove.
The win was set-up by a fine slow bowling display from Peter Harper and completed by a superb opening partnership of 196 from Angus Porter and Derek Milsom.
Electing to Bat first on a good wicket and lightning quick outfield, the Boyne Hill openers Morgan and Dunthorne started in aggressive fashion against the Wooburn attack of Graham Dare and veteran spinner Peter Harper. However, the wily Harper set the field deep and the temptation proved too much for Morgan (27) with Wahleed Hussain taking a well judged catch at long-on.
Dunthorpe was then joined by Oldershaw, but Harper soon had his second wicket with wicket-keeper Angus Porter taking a good inside edge catch to remove Oldershaw (10). Wooburn were now warming to their task and Graham Dare got the wicket his fine spell deserved by trapping the useful Dunthorpe (26) LBW.
Boyne Hill needed a period of consolidation and Steve Palfrey began the recovery with a measured innings with good support from Joyce. Palfrey (23) was eventually caught at deep square leg by David Jordan from, again, Harper.
With the Boyne Hill batsmen unable to get Harper away and the excellent Wooburn fielding, a decent total now looked in doubt. Joyce (44) attempted to increase the run rate, but he was bowled by David Jordan and the innings fell away to a below-par 197-7 from 52 overs. .
Harper bowling the full 26 overs for just 72 runs and taking 4 wickets. In view of the conditions, a fantastic effort.
In reply, the mature opening pair of Angus Porter and Derek Milsom steadily built Wooburn’s reply against the opening attack of Tracey and Salmon.
A solid start soon developed into a match winning partnership and despite various bowling changes little changed, although the off-spin of Dunthorpe seemed the best chance of a break through. Unfortunately for Boyne Hill, both Porter and Milsom held firm and took the game away from the home team.
The partnership was finally broken after 38 overs with just two required as Milsom (82) mistimed a full-toss, however, victory soon followed leaving Porter (93) undefeated.
