A dramatic late fight back was not quite enough for Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI to snatch an unlikely victory over Hurst 2nd XI, the visitors holding their nerve to edge home by three wickets. Hurst had reached 196-2 chasing 216, but a late clatter of wickets almost handed the match to Wooburn.



Batting first in hot, draining conditions, Wooburn struggled on a dry pitch, losing important early wickets to see themselves 37-2. A determined 49 from Angus Porter and an aggressive, if fortunate, 85 from Nadin Ishaq brought Wooburn back into the match, the pair adding 95 for the third wicket. Solid contributions from Imran Ishaq and Stuart Savage followed, allowing the Narks skipper to declare on 215-5.



Hurst similarly lost an early wicket, but Cronin and Carpenter took the score to 82 before the veteran Carpenter’s wild swing saw him stumped. Lack and Cronin then proceeded to take the game away from Wooburn, looking relatively comfortable in a stand of 114. When Cronin was eventually dismissed for an excellent 75, only 20 more runs were needed.



However, Cronin’s departure sparked a middle order collapse, Graham Dare picking up three wickets as 196-2 became 200-6. Patel hit a boundary before ‘walking’ for a catch to Porter behind the stumps, a tremendous sporting gesture from the Hurst player. With 8 still needed, Fillingham joined Fisher, but there were no further alarms as a relieved Hurst reached their target. Wooburn remain top of the table, but with their lead now cut to just three points.
