Match Report

Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI suffered at third successive defeat, this time at the hands of promotion favourites Beaconsfield 3rd XI.

With both teams missing key players, Wooburn decided to bat after winning the toss. The Beaconsfield pitch was fast and bouncy, conditions that were entirely alien to the Wooburn batsmen, and they struggled to cope with the steep bounce, particularly from the impressive bowling of Carr (3-19).

After the early loss of Angus Porter, Wooburn looked to consolidate through Derek Milsom and Alan Cuthbert, the pair reaching 41 before Carr began to make inroads. Both fell in quick succession as the visitors slipped to 52-4. A spirited effort from Graham Dare (29) followed, and he received good support down the order.

Wahleed Hussain and Pete Harper contributed well, and the innings ended with an entertaining cameo from number 11 Andy Cowan. His first scoring stroke, the ball taking the shoulder of the bat and looping over gully for 2, doubled his highest score and trebled his career total. But he was not finished there, employing the pull shot to good effect to take his score to 8. The innings ending when Harper, unluckily, became the fourth Narkovian given out lbw by the home umpire.

With just 141 to defend, Wooburn needed early wickets and an inspired Hussain certainly gave Coles something to think about, disturbing his stumps with the score on just 5. Freer and Bailey took the score on to 42 before Hussain struck again. Dare then removed McCall caught at cover for a duck, and Wooburn briefly threatened to derail the Beaconsfield innings.

However, Yuill took advantage of some short pitched bowling and the fast outfield to make the game safe for the home side. Wooburn managed to take two further wickets, but despite a couple of close but unsuccessful lbw shouts, it was not quite enough to put Beaconsfield under pressure. Beaconsfield completed a relatively comfortable win with 23 overs remaining to leapfrog the Narks and go top of the table.
