2nds Seal Promotion with Comfortable Win

Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI rounded off an excellent season with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Harefield 3rd XI, thereby sealing promotion from TVCL Division 6A.

Wooburn went into the match knowing that a win would guarantee promotion, and opted to field first on winning the toss. A youthful Harefield made a solid start against some testing seam bowling from Phil Cuthbert and Graham Dare. Cuthbert eventually made the breakthrough, bowling Collett for 8. Shiel followed soon after, well taken at first slip. Frustration then followed for the Narks, Metcalf and Evans riding their luck in a 50 stand, but Cuthbert got his reward when Dave Jordan took a good catch to remove Evans.

Wood quickly followed, clipping the ball to the safe hands of Mani Sharma at mid wicket off Wahleed Hussain. This brought Harefield’s captain, Petley, to the crease. Matt Paine now came into the attack, surprising Metcalf with a quick yorker that flew of the inside edge to fine leg. Paine produced a fine spell, and was rewarded when Metcalf was bowled.

Much now depended on Petley, and he looked in good touch on his way to 28. With Matt Paine having to come off after four overs, Phil Cuthbert returned and soon picked up Petley, well caught low down at mid wicket by Dave Jordan. Cuthbert proceeded to work his way through the tail, before a quickfire 22 from Bryant pushed Harefield up to a respectable 180 all out.

A good effort by the Wooburn bowlers, with Phil Cuthbert finishing with 6-56 from an unprecendented 20 overs, well supported by Graham Dare and the promising Wahleed Hussain and Matt Paine.

Wooburn’s reply started well against some wayward bowling. Petley bowled tidily, but Wooburn were initially able to score freely from the other end. A fired up Evans replaced Bryant, and soon took the wicket of Angus Porter after an opening stand of 41. Derek Milsom then quickly followed to leave the match back in the balance at 52-2.

Mani Sharma and Alan Cuthbert now looked to consolidate, and had to contend with a fiery spell from Evans. He worked up a good pace, while Petley kept things tight at the other end. At 75, Sharma’s patience ran out as he tried to hit Petley over the top, succeeding only in holing out to mid off.

Rob Smith joined Cuthbert, and immediately despatched Petley to the boundary. The two batsmen looked to push the ball around, while taking advantage of anything loose. They were also helped by an extraordinary number of extras, which totalled an astonishing 58 by the end of the innings.

A lesson had been learned from the recent Windsor match, with plenty of overs in hand, the batsmen were content to occupy the crease and pick up runs when they came. Cuthbert passed 50 before being forced to retire with cramp with just 16 needed. Dave Jordan helped Smith finish the job.

In six of the last seven seasons, the 2nd XI have been either promoted or relegated, and they will start 2007, yet again, in a different division. A special mention for Pete Harper and Rob Rogers, who were missing on Saturday but took nearly 60 league wickets between them, and contributed hugely to the team’s success.
