268 - 6
232 - 5
At long last the sun came out this year and a terrific high scoring forty over match resulted, with the highlight being Chris Halls debut ton.
Never one to change the habit of a lifetime, skipper for the day Matt Curtis lost the toss allowing Woodley to take advantage of batting first under a hot sun by racking up 268 for 6 their skipper Jawwad Raja top scoring with a good 78 and A.Ali getting a fine fifty five not out.
Ally Paine struggled to control the swinging ball for his first three overs but changed ends to bowl five good ones. The two old warhorses Richie Barker and Rob Smith both returned tidy figures bowling their overs in two spells each. Matt Paine took a wicket with his first ball and bowled six pacey overs but due to a mix up on the scoreboard had his figures ruined when he returned to bowl the last over. Little Rob Hall had the best figures bowling six tidy overs for two wickets with a catch put down. Rob’s first wicket was caught in the slips by Richard (Great catch sir) Davis his sports teacher. Debutant Ed Pitcher bowling for the first time for two years was unfortunate to have two well established and quick between the wickets batsmen facing him who made his figures look worse than his bowling deserved.
Debutant Richard (Great shot sir) Davis opened Wooburns reply with the redoubtable Rob Smith. After a frisky start Rob was bowled bringing the star of the show Chris Hall to the crease. Chris immediately followed Richards lead and got after the Woodley bowling taking advantage of the many gaps. The scoreboard moved along with the run rate until Davis finally succumbed for a superb 48 chasing a wide one. Chris never faltered, continuing his relentless yet sensible assault on the Woodley bowlers.
George Taylor contributed one of his cameos but the runs became harder to find with the bowlers tightening things up. With three or four overs left a proud father witnessed his sons debut ton as Chris scampered another two. The innings finally closed at 232 for 5. Even though Wooburn lost 500 hundred runs and a first ton made it a Sunday afternoon to remember.
So it’s congratulations to Chris and also for Greg Lawes who scored his first run and took his first catch for Wooburn. May it be the first of many for you both.
