Match Report

Yet again stand in skip Matt Curtis showed appalling form with the toss allowing White Waltham to win the toss and bat first. The Wooburn players were not too unhappy as England were playing Ecuador so play started at 1pm and tea taken at 5pm to allow both teams to watch the second half. This meant anyone not batting or umpiring for the first 20 overs of Wooburns reply could see the first half.

Although he was helped by some slightly generous umpiring, for the second week running Ally Paine bowled a superb tight opening spell and was again unlucky not to take more than his 1 wicket. Dove Jordan also bowled well in his first spell but had his figures knocked a bit when he returned at the death. Paine was the first to strike having C.Metherell well caught by Richie Barker at mid on. L.Beard and A.Elliot consolidated before Elliot went to a slip catch of rare genius from Curtis off the bowling of the deserving Jordan. After Tom Lees struck to remove Beard LBW the visitors again dug in with A.Metherell and A.West putting on a good 49 before little Rob “Dynamite” Hall, replacing the unlucky Robbie Rogers, dismissed him with another good Richie Barker catch bringing about one of Robbies drier observations. Next in was D.Allen who with good support from Metherell played a skippers innings to take the score to 140 before Metherell was bowled by Luke Carter for 35. Carter then had N.Hencher smartly taken by keeper Chris Hall before ending Allen’s good knock of 43 neatly catching him at point off the returning Lees. Carter then capped off a superb all round fielding display by running out D.Rosom with a throw from the mid off boundary. The White Waltham innings closed on a competitive 183 for 8 off their allotted 40 overs.

Wooburns reply got off to a bad start when Martin Tennant batting for the first time this year in last years unwashed whites was caught down the leg side off the slowest leg break bowled this season. Tom Lees soon followed (one can only assume the pair of them wished to watch England’s first half), allowing the inform Chris Hall to join the vigilant Mark Tennant at the crease. They then preceded to take the score past the ton before an extended tea break was taken after 20 overs. Having witnessed England’s exhilarating victory over Ecuador both teams returned to the field to resume the match. Hall full of confidence and Tennant who was visibly growing in confidence both reach their fifties before Hall was caught for 53 including one brutal six. Matt Curtis came and went, quickly followed by Luke Carter leaving it up to the experienced Richie Barker to stop the wobble. Barker dug in with Tennant and moved the score up to 173 when he was caught for 13. Dove Jordan then helped Tennant (proving what a fine all-rounder he is finishing on 77 no) ((ED: no need for sarcasm!)) to see Wooburn home.
