Match Report
Hall sets up Wooburn Win
After the morning drizzle the pitch was green and damp and, on winning the toss, Matt Curtis was ordered by his contingent of bowlers to bowl first. The lads did not let him down. First up was Matt Paine with a really fiery first spell, putting the wind up the Chorleywood openers, and getting rid of the dangerous looking No2 caught 2nd slip by Russell Dale via Chris Halls shoulder. Tom Lees shared the new ball to great effect having the No1 taken at 1st slip by Curtis.
Nos 3 (26) and 4 dug in and, with a mixture of good and fortuitous shots, moved the score along to 50 off the first 10, when Lees Struck again clean bowling No3. No5 (25) joined No4 and again dug in with young Rob Hall Jr’s (16-0 off 4) naggingly accurate bowling proving difficult to get away. Ally Paine in his last match of the season was now on for Lees and again gave the Woods batsmen something to think about, eventually removing No5 with the catch of the season from keeper Chris Hall off a bottom edge.
Richie Barker was now firing away from the road end, and took the wicket of the left handed No6 with a beautifully judged catch at mid off by little Rob, after having him badly missed by Curtis when on 0. Andy Johnson replaced Ally Paine and returned excellent figures of 3-25 of 6. Jagging the ball about, he clean bowled the vigilant No4 and No7 and had the hard hitting 12 year old No8 confidently caught at mid on by Arran Shearer. With the Woods tail containing two big strong lads who gave the ball a mighty biff Matt Paine and Tom Lees did well to contain them and restrict the innings to 189-8 off 40 overs.
Tom Lees was quickly back into the game, opening Wooburn’s reply with ever willing and fast improving Luke Carter. Both had to work hard against the Woods bowling that was hostile and accurate. Tom fell in the seventh over and, if Chorleywood thought that was a breakthrough, they didn’t reckon on the form of the Narks No3 Chris Hall. With Chris’s confidence rubbing off on him, Luke was beginning to flow when he unfortunately lobbed one up to extra cover bringing in Arran Shearer to join Chris.
No matter how hard the Woods bowlers tried Chris’s wonderful clean hitting left them struggling for ideas. After a slightly nervous start Arran was now gleaning some of Chris’s confidence and began to strike the ball to the boundary himself. Chris was caught trying to blast another six, this time to the extra cover boundary for a top class 62 bringing in Andy Johnson to join Arran.
Arran (22) now enjoying himself was scoring freely until falling caught behind. Again Chorleywood were right in the game especially when Russell Dale quickly followed Arran back to the pavilion. It was now up to Richie Barker and AJ to bring the game back for Wooburn. This they duly did with Richie leading the way with a storming but controlled 38, before he too fell caught at mid off. Matt Curtis (16no) joined AJ (27no) in the middle and together they saw out the game in the penultimate over.
A good Wooburn win was achieved in a terrific match played in a good spirit and at a lovely ground. Thanks to Ben Barker for scoring, with a little help from his mum!
