88 all out
229 - 4
On a ridiculously beautiful day for mid April, Wooburn travelled to the picturesque settings of Hurley Cricket Club for the first game of the 2007 season.
Wooburn had 2 debutants in their midst (3 if you count Smally\s dog, Arnold) in the form of Dean Barker, a gap year student working at Davenies School, and 12 year Ollie Rendell who is a Davenies pupil.
A 45 over a side game was agreed upon and Wooburn batted first, getting off to a solid start with Dave Rogers timing the ball as well as ever and Dean Barker scampering between the wickets much to the displeasure of Dave! Once Dave was taken at midwicket for 24 and Dean followed lbw for 21, James White & Andy Tennant took the score onto 140-3 in the 30th over before Andy holed out at long on for 13.
Richie Barker joined James and both players played beautifully, with boundaries being struck with ease. Richie kindly retired with 5 overs left in order to give Ollie Rendell his first bat in Wooburn colours and he looked very comfortable against the returning opening bowlers before he was run out attempting a quick single.
Wooburn\s innings ended on 229-4 with James making a superb 90 not out.
After tucking into a fantastic tea, Wooburn\s opening bowling pair of Mark Tennant and David Bushnell got some early swing and Hurley\s opening batsmen struggled to find any sort of fluency. It was no surprise when Mark removed Dawson\s leg stump, and after striking 3 glorious boundaries, Bushnell trapped Day lbw.
Smally bowled remarkably well for his first bowl of the season and had Allen caught behind to leave Hurley reeling on 28-3.
15 year old Matt Paine, and 12 year old Ollie Rendell were then introduced, and proceeded to clean bowl 3 Hurley batsmen between them before Ollie replaced Dave Rogers behind the stumps!
The young pair were not finished there either, as they combined to have Cole caught behind to give Paine his 3rd wicket.
The Barker\s then bowled in tandem to finish off the innings, Richie taking one wicket and Dean two, with Ollie Rendell capping a fine day with yet another well taken catch behind.
A very comfortable win for Wooburn, and a highly enjoyable day for all involved. Every batsmen and bowler contributed and if this performance from young stars Matt Paine and Ollie Rendell is anything to go by then the future certainly looks bright for Wooburn Narkovians…..
