Match Report
Disappointing
Wooburn Narkovians 1st X1 started off their league season in disappointing fashion on Saturday, struggling to a 16 run defeat at the hands of Hurst 1st X1.
With the rain somehow staying away for the day, Hurst won the toss and chose to bat. Mark Tennant chose the wrong end, bowling into a strong wind and found it dfficult to find any consistency. At the other end James White fared better, picking up the early wicket of Rumble, caught in the covers by Pidge, and then removing Hawkes\ off stump to leave Hurst on 32-2.
Dave Small fared even less well bowling into the wind and an expensive spell ended with 4 consecutive boundaries and a frustrated Smally let himself and the club down with his show of dissent for which he sincerely apologizes for.
The introduction of Richie Barker into the attack proved fruitful for Wooburn, as he took 3 wickets in a tidy spell of seam bowling. However, Lack was still looking comfortable and moved on to his 50 before holing out to Ian Cuthbert in the deep off Andrew Tennant.
Mark Tennant was re-introduced with the wind behind him and bowled with vigour and pace to claim all 4 wickets in the tail as Hurst were bowled out for 181 from their full 52 overs.
Wooburn\s innings started poorly when Pidge tickled one down the leg side off Higgs and James White edged one behind off the same bowler. Tom Lees looked in fine form opening the batting for the first time and he and Dave Rogers took the score onto 55 before Lees was caught and bowled for a fine 28.
Chris Hall hit some lusty blows in his 13 before a rush of blood to the head saw him charge Higgs and was stumped. Ian Cuthbert then joined Rogers for the biggest partnership of the innings as they added 42 before Rodgers edged the returning Burgess to Hawkes.
Wooburn were looking comfortable needing 43 with 5 wickets remaining until Ian Cuthbert, Richie Barker and Smally all departed in quick time and the Wooburn Wooble (copyright) was well and truly on and were suddenly 144-8!
It was now down to the Tennant brothers and Martin & Andrew were looking in ominous form as they added 17 runs before Martin attempted a suicidal single and was run out.
With 20 runs now needed and the run rate creeping up Mark and Andrew played sensibly, added quick runs until Andrew was snaffled at mid wicket to give Hurst 25 points and Wooburn 8.
Fortunately for Wooburn, most games were abondoned due to the weather and so if there was one weekend to lose, then this was it and Wooburn find themselves in 4th position and looking forward to the remainder of the season…..
