Match Report
Party Time!
Wooburn continued their encouraging start to the season on Saturday with a comfortable 20 point victory away at Chalfont St Peter.
After seeing previous results at the ground and hearing horror reports about the wicket, skipper Dave Small was not at all disappointed to be asked to bowl first by Chalfont captain Razzaq.
Mark Tennant and Dave Small opened up well with the new ball - bowling with good pace and no width as has been the case all season. The first wicket fell when White was bowled by Tennant and Ahmed soon followed, trapped lbw by Small.
Fawcet and White added useful runs before Fawcet was caught at short leg by Small off Tennant to leave Chalfont on 54-3. A period of consolidation followed with Chalfont struggling to score off fine bowling from Richie Barker and James White, and it was no surprise when two quick wickets fell - Raja bowled by White and Rahul lbw to Barker.
By now Chalfont were on 86-5 with 30 overs gone and Wooburn sensed the opportunity to wrap up the innings. However, Ahmed and Hewston had other ideas, and added 15 quick runs before Ahmed was brilliantly run out by Ian Cuthbert and Hewston fell to the guile of Martin Tennant. Martin quickly grabbed himself another wicket, with debutant Robin Gray taking a fine tumbling catch at backward point.
The returning Mark Tennant polished off the remaining two wickets to leave himself with 25 wickets from the first 5 league games of the season! Chalfont finished on 146 all out from 48 overs.
Wooburn were keen to get victory assured as soon as possible and get to the big party taking place at Wooburn Park!
Robin Gray and Tom Less opened the innings and Robin wasted no time in dispatching anything loose before holing out to deep square leg to give Chalfont an early breakthrough!
Lees and White then consolidated against some disciplined bowling on a very inconsistent pitch. The pair took Wooburn on to 41 before Lees drove to a diving mid off. Dave Pidgeon then joined White and they combined brilliantly with some sensible batting to guide Wooburn to within site of victory before both were adjudged lbw to Rahul.
Pidgeon made a fine 46 and White a patient 34 in their partnership of 69.
Ian Cuthbert and Jon Nelson finished the job off in style, with Cuthbert hitting 3 glorious, consecutive boundaries to guide Wooburn to victory with more than 11 overs to spare….. a good days work.
