Match Report

Tip Top Tom

An impressive unbeaten 87 from Tom Lees allowed Wooburn Narkovians 1sts to capitalise on a good all-round bowling performance and secure a comfortable seven-wicket win over Bagshot 2nds in their Thames Valley League match at Wooburn Park on Saturday.

The home side chose to field first in damp conditions, but despite testing spells from Mark Tennant and Dave Small, the first 20 overs of Bagshot’s innings saw only one wicket fall, with Richie Barker clinging on to a sharp slip catch off Tennant’s bowling.

Young and Rowlett compiled a fifty partnership for the visitors, who were handily placed at 72-1 in the 23rd over when Tennant claimed his second wicket, bowling Young off an inside edge. Rowlett went on to reach 48 before James White made arguably the most important breakthrough of the innings, clipping the batsman’s off stump.

Even then it looked like Bagshot might be able to set a testing target, but another wicket for White and two for Barker saw them fall from 116-3 to 120-6. Thereafter the visitors struggled to add any impetus to their innings. Tennant returned to pick up a third wicket and Mo Aslam took two in a tidy spell at the death that left Bagshot on 161-9 after their 52 overs.

The Wooburn run chase began with Lees immediately looking in good touch, driving the ball fluently. With the score on 37, Dave Rogers skied a pull shot to square leg and, not long after, White was unluckily run out backing up when the bowler’s foot deflected a scorching Lees’ drive onto the stumps.

However, any Wooburn nerves were calmed by Lees and Barker, who set about building a century partnership to take the game away from Bagshot. To their credit, the visitors battled on through a spell of rain that made bowling and fielding increasing difficult, but they could not get a much-needed breakthrough.

The Wooburn pair kept up a good scoring rate throughout, so that when Barker finally fell for 37, just seven runs were required for victory with more than a dozen overs to go, and Ian Cuthbert joined Lees to finish the job with no further alarms.
