176 - 6
132 all out
Wooburn Narkovians 1sts’ “spin twins”, Mo Aslam and Phil Clarke, took six wickets for 12 runs in the space of 28 balls to wrap up a 44-run victory over Hayes 1sts in their Thames Valley League match at Wooburn Park on Saturday.
Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Wooburn’s top order struggled to make much headway against the visitors’ opening attack, Wayland and Morgan. Dave Rogers and James White both fell cheaply, leaving Tom Lees and Dave Pidgeon to consolidate the innings with a steady fifty partnership.
Hayes’ change bowlers, Green and King, continued to demonstrate the good control of line and length that had made the openers difficult to score off. As Wooburn tried to up the tempo, Lees was run out for 30 and Pidgeon gloved a catch to the keeper having made 37. When Chris Rowley quickly followed, the home side stood at 90-5 after 38 overs.
Ian Cuthbert and Richie Barker combined to get the scoreboard ticking over at a better rate, but when Barker holed out in the 46th over with the score on 126, Wooburn were still a long way short of setting a testing target.
Fortunately, Cuthbert was now looking in good touch, keeping long on busy with a series of powerful drives. He was joined by Aslam, and by adeptly targeting the gaps in the field and running themselves virtually to a standstill, the pair added 50 in the remaining six overs. Cuthbert reached a well-deserved half-century off the last ball of the innings, while Aslam finished 23 not out, as Wooburn closed on 176-6.
Mark Tennant caused the visitors’ opening batsmen plenty of problems in his first three overs, with a catch going down in the gully, before he was forced off with a muscle strain. But Hayes captain Simon Green and partner Ramneth showed a desire to go after the rest of the Wooburn attack, posting a fifty partnership, although not without a few close calls.
A couple of half-chances hit the deck before some shrewd field placement by the home side’s skipper, Dave Small, saw Ramneth spoon a Barker delivery straight into the hands of Lees at deepish cover. Barker also crucially dismissed the hard-hitting Hayes captain for 41, while in between the demise of the two openers, White removed the in-form Mickey Green cheaply. Wallis gave a slip catch to Tennant, also off White, to leave the visitors at 73-4.
Farooq and Arshad got the batting side back into the match with a 47-run stand, but the Wooburn captain’s decision to bowl spinners Aslam and Clarke in tandem proved a wise one, as the pair engineered a Hayes collapse from 120-4 to 132 all out.
Aslam got the first breakthrough, bowling Farooq for 36, and added two more wickets – one thanks to a superb catch by Small, who made good ground to dive and hold a skier from Wayland inches from the grass. Clarke also claimed three victims, including trapping King in front of his stumps to wrap up a rare 25-point win for Wooburn.
