A dismal batting performance resulted in a heavy defeat for Wooburn Narkovians 1sts at the hands of Slough 3rds in their Thames Valley League match at Wooburn Park on Saturday. Chasing 210 for victory, the home side never recovered from the loss of early wickets and eventually stumbled to 115 all out.

The game had started well for Wooburn, with Mark Tennant picking up a wicket with the first delivery of the match. The loss of the new ball in the river and the very wet outfield didn’t help the fielding side, but Tennant, who finished with 6-50 from 18 overs, continued to make inroads into the visitors’ batting, and Slough were struggling at 70-6 at one point, although still scoring at a respectable rate. As the innings progressed, A.Uddin took advantage of anything overpitched to make a brisk 78, and with good late-order support from Jetty and Gumbs, he was able to lead Slough to a more than useful 209-8.

Wooburn’s reply got off to a poor start as two wickets fell to M.Uddin before the score had reached double figures. Dave Rogers and Dave Pidgeon dug in and were beginning to look comfortable when Rogers became the first of four LBW victims.

Ian Cuthbert joined Pidgeon and a string of boundaries followed, giving the home side some brief hope, but the flourishing partnership ended when Cuthbert was also adjudged LBW, this time to A.Uddin. The Slough bowler completed a man-of-the-match performance by taking five wickets – including Pidgeon for a top score of 42 – to add to his earlier contribution with the bat, as Wooburn collapsed in the increasingly gloomy conditions from 83-3 to 115 all out after 39 overs.
