Wooburn Narkovians 1sts’ mid-season slump continued at Wooburn Park on Saturday as Windsor 2nds handed the home side its fourth Thames Valley League defeat in five games. Another disappointing Wooburn display saw Windsor cruise to an emphatic victory by six wickets with more than 16 overs to spare.



The fact that the pitch cover had been ‘requisitioned’ earlier in the week by some of the local youths for use as a makeshift shelter in the woods meant that the wicket was very soft and bowler-friendly when Wooburn batted. Despite this, the home side found themselves well placed at 83-1 in the 21st over, thanks to some determined batting by Dave Rogers (49) and Andy Tennant (34).



However, once that partnership was broken, the innings began to subside slowly, with only Mark Tennant (23) and Jon Nelson (24 not out) offering any sustained resistance. With the pitch gradually improving, a final total of 155 in 49.2 overs looked well below par.



Mark Tennant bowled a testing opening spell, picking up an early wicket which, coupled with a fortunate run out, gave Wooburn a good start in the field. However, a heavy shower of rain subdued the last of the demons in the pitch, and Riches and Malik put together an 89-run stand that effectively ended the home side’s hopes of victory.



Mo Aslam eventually removed Riches for 48, and another run out followed, but Malik remained fairly untroubled, punishing anything overpitched on his way to an unbeaten 78. A big straight six by the Windsor batsman completed his side’s six-wicket victory in just the 34th over.
