A six-wicket haul from Tom Lees set up a comfortable nine-wicket win for Wooburn Narkovians 1sts over Finchampstead 3rds in their Thames Valley League match at Wooburn Park on Saturday.



Having won the toss and chosen to bat, a youthful Finchampstead side, much changed from the teams’ fixture earlier this season, battled hard but struggled to make headway against some tight Wooburn bowling. James White claimed the first breakthrough for the home side during his spell of eight overs for 15 runs, but it was Lees who did the greatest damage, picking up wickets regularly during an 18-over stint that left him with figures of 6-64.



Even with some acceleration in the later stages of the innings, Finchampstead’s final total of 154-8 seemed unlikely to be enough against possibly the strongest batting line-up that Wooburn had put out all season, and so it proved. Having seen off a testing early spell from Bell, Dave Rogers and Paul Cooper put on 110 for the first wicket against the visitors’ inexperienced attack before Cooper fell to a sharp catch one short of a fifty. A couple of sweetly timed sixes by new batsman White quickly brought the game towards its conclusion, and Rogers pushed the winning run to finish unbeaten on 64 as Wooburn coasted home with nine wickets and more than eight overs in hand.
