Wooburn Narkovians narrowly failed to beat high-flying Chalfont St. Peter in Division 3 of the Thames Valley League. Ian Cuthbert dominated the Wooburn effort with a fine unbeaten century, but it was to no avail as Wooburn fell five runs short of their target.



Chalfont batted first on a hot sunny day, making a challenging 225-6 on a wicket the gradually broke up as the match went on. Phil Cuthbert put in an excellent spell of fast medium bowling, showing levels of fitness and accuracy not seen previously this season. Dave Pocock\s medium pace also proved effective, with the batsmen only scoring freely towards the end of the innings.



The Wooburn run chase was given the perfect start as openers Dave Pidgeon and Ian Cuthbert put on 93 for the first wicket. Cuthbert played particularly well, stroking his way to 50 inside 18 overs. Pidgeon was the first to go, making 39, and he was soon followed by Adam Chivers. Nigel Turner then joined Cuthbert and the scoring rate slowed as the innings went through a period of consoldiation.



Cuthbert then found runs hard to come by against the accurate Chalfont attack. Stuart Dalrymple bowled well, removing Nigel Turner for 39, and having Chris Sullivan stumped by Seabrook. Phil Cuthbert went in for the final push, during which brother Ian completed his hundred, but Wooburn fell just short in the end as their frustrating season continues.
