TEAM EFFORT BLASTS WOOBURN

An excellent all-round team performance lay behind Wooburn Narkovians 2nds\ ultimately comfortable 80 run victory over Caversham and Redingensians 2nds on Saturday.

Wooburn batted first and Dave Rogers and Alan Cuthbert gave the innings a decent start before Anwer knocked out Rogers\ off stump. Tab Nawaz quickly followed, and Stuart Savage joined Cuthbert in the partnership of the match. The pair added 88 before Cuthbert under-edged a sweep to the wicket-keeper on 59. A mini-collapse followed, and 121-2 became 124-5. Adam Chivers helped Savage steady the ship, striking the ball well in making an important 22. Savage eventually fell to the off-spinner Rehman for 56, but the tail pushed the score up to 185-8 before the declaration came.

The home side\s innings started quietly, with few runs coming off the bat. Pervez, hampered by a hand injury sustained in the field, retired hurt, and was quickly followed by Norcott. When Camidge provided Savage with his first catch, Caversham & Redingensians had slumped to 31-3. Pervez returned and looked reasonably comfortable until Rumbold called him for a quick single. Tab\s direct hit found him a couple of yards short of safety. Rob Rogers picked up Keneally and Qadeer had Anwer caught at mid-off. Suddenly the score was 61-6.

Captain Alfie Rehman now joined Rumbold, and this pair held Wooburn up for some time. Both continued to play their shots, forcing Rogers out of the attack. He was replaced by Richard Barker, while Jason Degelas returned at the other end. This pair proved to be the winning combination for Wooburn. First Barker had an lbw appeal upheld against Rumbold, then Rehman edged Degelas into the safe hands of Savage behind the stumps. Barker made short work of the tail to finish with 3-6, but Waxman was the pick of the Wooburn bowlers with 3-34 at the top of the innings.
