CUTHBERT AND DAY TAKE THE HONOURS

Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI opened their Thames Valley League season with a comfortable 131 run victory over Redingensians on Saturday. Good individual performances from Paul Cuthbert (78) and Phil Day (5-49) underpinned a fine team effort, as weakened Redingensians were outclassed in all departments of the game.

New Wooburn skipper Rob Smith made sure normal service was resumed, by losing the toss and being invited to bat. Wooburn responded well, running up 249-6 before Smith unselfishly declared after 51 overs. Cuthbert\s innings was the highlight, but there were solid contributions all the way down the order, particularly from Smith, who managed to keep the momentum going after Cuthbert was dismissed. Kevin Czakan and Phil Day provided the entertainment at the end of the innings, both hitting big sixes in the last few overs.

Redingensians\ reply started badly, losing a wicket without a run on the board. It soon became apparent that they were going to struggle, with the revitalised Day and the unlucky Czakan keeping up the pressure. Opener Evans played the sheet anchor role, carrying his bat for 30, but he received little support from his teammates.

Ison made a chancy 28, but he always looked vulnerable and was finally bowled by Czakan. At the other end, Day\s accurate medium pace proved too much for the batsmen. He ended up with five wickets, but it was batting hero Paul Cuthbert who wrapped up the game, taking two wickets in two balls as Redingensians were all out for 118.
