CUTHBERT CUTS DOWN CHENIES

Paul Cuthbert\s imperious unbeaten 81 steered Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI to an ultimately comfortable victory over Chenies & Latimer in the Thames Valley League on Saturday. Cuthbert has a liking for Chenies\ bowling, having scored a century against them last season, and once again he hammered the ball to all parts of their picturesque village ground.

Earlier in the day, a Wooburn win had appeared the least likely result after they had taken the field with only nine men, and then saw paceman Kevin Czakan break down in only his third over. The suituation improved when Adam Chivers, having completed his tour of Chesham and the surrounding villages, joined his teammates. Soon after that, John Saunders made the breakthrough, inducing a poor stroke from the prolific Malcolm Davies.

Dave White then started to make inroads into the Chenies batting. He first had Northway caught behind, and then dismissed the Redpath brothers, running one out with a direct hit from fine leg, and bowling the other off his boot. Crossman made 19 before holing out to cover, and Grimwood edged to wicket-keeper Smith first ball. This left Chenies in trouble at 68-6, and it was left to their captain Brandon to orchestrate the recovery with a painstaking 50. He eventually hit a full toss into the safe hands of Paul Cuthbert at extra cover to give White his fifth wicket. Crook and Bedford fell to Cuthbert, before Miller connected with a couple of lusty blows to take Chenies up to a respectable 160-9.

The innings ended in controversy after Wooburn were prevented from taking the last Chenies wicket by a freak occurrence. Non-striker Miller had attempted to steal a bye to the wicket-keeper off the last ball, running half the length of the pitch. When the ball was returned to the bowler\s end for the run out, Wooburn discovered that the umpire had removed the bails and was off for his tea! They later received an apology for this, which could have cost them a bowling bonus point.

As it was, a target of 161 was well within Wooburn\s reach, and after the early loss of Chivers, Dave Rogers and Paul Cuthbert compiled a century stand to put them in control. Cuthbert was particularly dominant, taking full toll of anything off line. Rogers was content to play the supporting role, before he holed out attempting to hit Crossman over cover. Rob Smith kept the socre moving along, and when he was caught at slip, Alan Cuthbert joined his brother to see Wooburn home.
