Wooburn Narkovians 2nds comfortably defeated Chenies & Latimer 2nds by 8 wickets on Saturday, to maintain their position near the top of the league. Disciplined bowling, backed up by good fielding, set up the win, which Rob Smith and Stuart Savage completed with some ease.

Chenies\’ innings started slowly against some tight bowling from Tim Waxman and Jason Degelas. For long periods, the batsmen were content with survival, and the scoring rate was rarely above two runs per over. Waxman made the early breakthroughs, removing Muffett, Golding and finally Wenman, in an excellent spell that brought him 3-33. Degelas beat the bat on numerous occasions, and was unfortunate not to take a wicket. Chenies continued to find scoring difficult against the spin of Rob Rogers and left-arm seam of Qadeer. Only Larkin showed any real intent, hitting one big six in his 20. Otherwise, the bowlers kept on top, with Rogers picking up three good wickets and Qadeer two.

Wooburn\‘s innings began in slightly warmer conditions, more akin to summer. Alan Cuthbert fell early to a ball that kept low, but otherwise the batsmen looked secure. Miller did cause some problems with his gentle inswing, and was prone to the occasional outburst when frustration got the better of him. He did eventually take the wicket of Dave Rogers with the socre on 35, to give Chenies some hope. Batting was tricky for a while, but Rob Smith, returning to the side, and Stuart Savage dug in, gradually taking control. A tiring Miller was forced out of the attack by a series of powerful strokes from Savage, and Chenies back up bowling was not quite up to scratch. With Miller out of the way, Wooburn raced home in a flurry of boundaries. The third wicket partnership reached 92 with Savage unbeaten on 51 and Smith on 42.
