TAILENDERS FRUSTRATE WOOBURN BOWLERS
Wooburn Narkovians 2nds were frustrated by Bracknell 2nds\’ tailenders in their Thames Valley Division 5 match on Saturday, and were forced to settle for a draw. Asked to bat first on a good pitch, Wooburn were indebted to contrasting half-centuries from Paul Cooper and Jason Degelas.
Cooper opened the innings with Alan Cuthbert, the pair adding 50 for the first wicket before Cuthbert was yorked by Dewick for 20. Tab Nawaz quickly followed, but Stuart Savage made a useful 21 before he fell to the leg-spinner Bray. When Degelas made his way out to the middle it looked unlikely Wooburn would achieve maximum points. Such fears were quickly dispelled as Degelas was soon into his stride. With Cooper feeding him the strike at every opportunity, the Wooburn blasted his way to an unbeaten 61. Cooper eventually fell to the penultimate ball of the innings for a fine knock of 74, with Wooburn declaring after 50 overs on an impressive 201-4.
Bracknell\‘s reply started badly when Dave Small bowled Triveoy with one the nipped back, but Wooburn had to wait a long time for their next success, as Stephenson and Dewick somehow survived. Both batsmen failed to connect with a number of big shots, but their wickets remained intact, as Wooburn rung the changes. Slow bowler Rob Rogers was introduced in an attempt to open up the game, and he took the wicket of Stephenson, while Qadeer, in the middle of an excellent spell, had Paul Dewick caught in the gully.
Phil Dewick and Bray now took up the challenge, managing to keep pace with the run rate, until Bray lifted Rogers into the safe hands of Small at deep square leg. Soon after, Phil Dewick top-edged a cut to Rob Smith at backward point, and this signalled the end of the chase, as Bracknell put up the shutters. Small returned to take the wickets of Martindale and Harmer, but it was too little too late. Charles and De Souza stoutly defended the last six overs to secure the draw for the visitors.
