CUTHBERTS CUFF BOWLERS

A fine spell of medium pace bowling from Phil Day and superb batting from the Cuthbert brothers, Alan and Paul, provided the backbone of another good team effort by Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI. The trio steered Wooburn to a four wicket win over Chalfont St. Peter to consolidate their position near the top of Division 3 of the Thames Valley League.

Chalfont won the toss, and in the hot conditions, they made the unusual decision to bat first. Openers Stevenson and Mander gave them a good start against Wooburn seamers Kevin Czakan and Day. Left-arm spinner Pete Harper replaced Czakan at the Chruch End, but it was Day who made the breakthrough, having Mander well caught by Paul Cuthbert at mid on. Soon after, Ormerod was well taken by Matt Curtis in the gully off Day.

Stevenson reached his fifty in the 40th over, and then accelerated well to reach 83 before Andy Tennant took a stinging catch in the covers off Harper. Mitchell, Osmond and Pearse all hit out well towards the end, pushing Chalfont past the 200. Day finished with yet another five wicket haul, taking 5-99. At the other end, Harper gave him good support, despite a painful big toe.

Wooburn\s reply started badly as emergency opener John Saunders fell in the first over, and he was soon followed by the strangley out of touch Dave Rogers. Paul Cuthbert, returning after a six week lay-off due to a broken finger, was joined by brother Alan, and they set about wresting the initiative back from the Chalfont bowlers. Both of them settled to the task well, adopting a strategy of keeping out the good balls, whilst hitting the bad ones for four. They also ran well between the wickets, and before long were in total control. They put on 125 before Paul was dismissed for 63, which included ten well struck boundaries. This left Wooburn needing 67 with 22 overs still to go.

Andy Tennant fell quickly, but Rob Smith helped Alan Cuthbert add a further 42, before Cuthbert was caught at cover for 94. It was the second week running he had been dismissed at that score. Smith departed for 18, but Day and skipper Matt Curtis guided Wooburn home, with Day typically finishing things off in the grand manner with a big six over mid wicket.
