Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI\s promotion hopes suffered a severe blow at the hands of rivals Aldershot in Division 3 of the Thames Valley League. A crushing nine wicket defeat has left Wooburn with only an outside chance of finishing in the top two places.



From the moment the captains walked out for the toss, nothing went right for Wooburn. Put into bat, all the batsmen struggled against the accurate Aldershot bowling. Dave Rogers played well early on, but as the ball got softer, it became increasingly difficult to time the ball on the slow wicket. Alan Cuthbert tried to hold the middle order together, but after he went, runs were hard to come by. A final total of 123 was never enough to put Aldershot under pressure, despite the slowness of the pitch.



Aldershot also found batting difficult, and could easily have lost three of four wickets in the opening overs. Varney and Gass rode their luck, and by the time Varney was caught at cover, the match was beyond Wooburn. John Saunders, Jeff Morris and Kevin Czakan all bowled well, but while the Wooburn batsmen were under pressure to score quickly, Aldershot knew that they had all the time in the world. Gass grafted his way to 57, bringing Aldershot back into the promotion race.
