PROMOTION PROSPECTS FOR WOOBURN NARKOVIANS



Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI gave themselves an excellent chance of promotion with a comprehensive 10-wicket win over Newbury 2nds on Saturday. With one game remaining, third-placed Wooburn now travel to struggling Odiham and Greywell tomorrow (Saturday) knowing that a 25-pointer will definitely see them promoted.



Newbury, requiring maximum points themselves to stay in contention, opted to bat first. They were soon in trouble, on a wicket softened by heavy overnight rain. Wooburn’s seam bowlers, particularly Tim Waxman (2-24) and Phil Day (4-17), made good use of the helpful conditions, reducing Newbury to 61-8. Chester and Scullion then added 47 for the ninth wicket as the wicket began to dry out, but Day returned to dismiss Chester for 34, and the innings quickly closed on 110.



The wicket had eased considerably when Wooburn’s openers, Paul Cooper and Dave Rogers, went into bat. The Newbury bowling also lacked penetration and control, with only Scullion troubling the batsmen. He suffered from a couple of dropped catches behind the wicket, Cooper being the lucky batsman. Other than that, Cooper and Rogers were relatively untroubled, the target being achieved in the 21st over. Rogers finished on 53 and Cooper 44.
